What Is The Cause Of Prominent Ear?

Protruding or prominent ears found in most people are caused by an underdeveloped antihelical fold. When the antihelical fold is not formed correctly, it causes the helix (outer edge of the ear) to protrude.

How Is Otoplasty Surgery Performed?

The specific surgical technique to be used depends on the type of prominent ear. In general, otoplasty includes the following steps:

  • An incision is made behind the ear or inside the folds of the ear,
  • Ear tissue is manipulated, which may involve removing cartilage or skin, reshaping the cartilage with permanent sutures, or grafting the cartilage into the ear,

How Is Recovery After Otoplasty ?

Once the procedure is complete, a dressing is placed over the ears. The dressing must be kept clean and dry. In addition to these, those who have undergone the operation should pay attention to the following:

  • Avoid touching or scratching your ears,
  • A sleeping position in which you don’t sleep on your ears is selected,
  • Wear clothes that don’t need to be worn over the head, such as a shirt.

In some cases, stitches may also need to be removed. The doctor will tell the patient whether this is necessary. Some types of sutures also dissolve on their own.

Prominent ear surgery is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures preferred by adults. Adults who have lost their self-confidence due to the appearance of their ears, avoid social environments and want to get rid of the aesthetic concerns can also consider prominent ear surgery.

Recovery from prominent ear surgery is very comfortable. Patients can return to school or work 2 days after the operation. Since dissolvable stitches are placed on the outer part of the ears, patients can comfortably resume their normal activities in a short time with the new shape of their ears, without the need for stitches. Patients are advised to use a hair band during the day for 7-10 days after the operation, and while lying down for a period of 1 month.
